Custom Holiday Train & Village Platforms November 6, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 0 Comments It’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than 2 months away. Like many people this is always a very busy time of year for me, with a never-ending to-do list, but one of my favorite family traditions and something I always make time for is putting a Lionel train layout under the Christmas tree. The set that I have was passed down to me by my father, and this year my daughter got one of the rare Lionel girl’s sets. Sharing a holiday tradition with my daughter. One of my favorite projects for clients is building a custom platform for their holiday train layout or Christmas village. I often hear that even though they already have the trains or buildings, they lack the time to build a suitable platform to display them on. That’s where I come in. I can build practically any type of custom platform for your holiday displays. In addition to custom sizes, I can build the platform from a variety of materials and finishes. The most common finish is the old-fashioned green felt most people remember from their childhood, but the felt comes in many other colors. I have also had clients request a platform that was stained, painted, or covered in pre-finished landscape mats. No matter the style, a nice custom-made platform under the tree with your trains (of any scale) or village makes a great focal point during the holidays and wonderful memories for years to come. There are several benefits to having your TV mounted on the wall rather than sitting on a TV stand or cabinet. First, it saves spaces by eliminating the TV stand/cabinet, so you have more floor space in the room. It might also allow you put a TV in the bedroom without putting it on your dresser. Second, wall-mounting your TV can actually be safer and prevent injuries from tipping over and falling if you happen to have young ones (or large dogs!) running around since it keeps the TV up and out of reach. Flat-screen TVs are actually meant to be wall-mounted – they have mounting holes built right into the back of them to attach to the mount. Third, it allows for an optimum viewing angle, since the TV can be mounted at the proper height for the room. Get a better view of the game with a wall-mounted TV. This TV actually has a gaming console and sound bar hidden behind it! Lastly, it gives you greater flexibility in where you put all of your connected devices (cable box, DVR, etc.) because you might be able to put these off to the side in the room and run longer cables to the TV, rather than having a large cabinet right by the TV itself. There are also many options to consider when wall-mounting. The wires can just hang down, be snaked through the wall if possible, or hidden in surface-mounted wire molding that can be painted to match the wall. There are also several types of mounts, including a fixed mount, a mount that tilts up/down, or even mounts where the TV can be pulled out from the wall and swiveled left/right. Reclaim space and reduce clutter by mounting the TV on the wall. This TV has the cable box mounted behind the dresser. Fall is Knocking on the Door August 28, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 0 Comments It seems hard to believe with the seemingly endless heat wave this summer, but Fall is quickly approaching. Now is a great time to start thinking about those indoor projects and crossing them off your to-do list before schedules get hectic with school and the upcoming holiday season. Check out some of our Pinterest boards for ideas! Shelves are up and filled, better utilizing the space. Walk-in Pantry August 17, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 0 Comments One topic that I hear quite often from customers is the need for more storage, be it inside the house, in the basement, or outside in their shed. Depending on the situation and budget, sometimes the best option is to make better use of space already available. Take this customer for instance. They had a very large closet in their kitchen that wasn’t getting much use. After painting the walls to match the kitchen, inexpensive pine boards and shelf brackets were mounted to the walls to give them a very large and functional walk-in pantry. The shelves were painted white to match the brackets and the trim in the rest of the kitchen. As you can see, this improvement made much more efficient use of the space. The final raised bed, complete with reinforced fencing. Raised Bed Garden July 16, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 0 Comments It’s the middle of summer and the heat has been keeping the idea of outdoor projects far from most folks’ minds. This 14′ x 30′ raised bed garden completed earlier this year, however, is probably in full production now! The 240 square feet of raised beds keep gardening tasks a little easier to reach and the 6′ fencing keeps most critters at bay. They will also stay warmer longer and extend the growing season into the fall months. The biggest challenge with this garden was the slope of the ground – the raised beds actually have a little step in the middle to keep them a fairly consistent depth. Built-in Bookcase May 16, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 1 Comment Sometimes a small project can make a huge impact all on its own. For example, this built-in bookshelf underneath a breakfast bar made all the difference in this sun room. For about $100 in materials plus the cost of labor, this client turned an unused breakfast bar into stylish storage. By running the baseboard over the base of the bookcase, it looks like it was always there. Turning the empty space under an unused breakfast bar into stylish storage. Garden Expansion April 26, 2016 / homecrafthandyman / 1 Comment Nothing better than spending a weekend working in the outdoors when the weather is nice. This project focused on expanding a raised bed garden that the owner had outgrown. Orig...
